Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to tighten the vagina. It is a type of genitoplasty. There can be many reasons for vagina to become slack such as after childbirth the stretching of the tissues and separation of muscles cause looseness. Aging can also be responsible for loosening the vagina. This lack of tone can contribute to sexual dysfunction. Vaginoplasty brings these separated muscles together, and the extra mucosal tissue of the vagina is removed. The external skin can also be removed for a better aesthetic appearance.

Procedure

It can be done under local anesthesia but patients may opt to have it done under general anesthesia.
Once the degree of tightening of the vagina to be done is determined, the area is marked to delineate the extra skin to be removed from inside the vagina. Then the loose vaginal tissues are tightened by using sutures and this results in the tightening of the vaginal canal. If required, external skin protrusion is also reduced for a more aesthetic result.

Patients may have one to two weeks of downtime after the procedure and may have temporary soreness, swelling, bruising, sickness upon waking from anesthesia and changes in sensation for the first few days.
