Hair Fall in Women

Good hair is the prime factor of looking attractive especially for women. Hence hair fall in them is quite stressful. Hair loss in women is different from that of men. It starts as widening of the partition line area and slowly radiates from there. Women usually never go bald and it usually starts gradually in the 40s or 50s.. Though Hair fall is a part of the natural aging process but there can be many reasons of hair loss in females.

Causes of Hair Fall in Women

Female Pattern Baldness / Androgenetic Alopecia: Under hormonal influence, in genetically predisposed people there is diffuse thinning of hair all over the scalp starting from the partition area. Sometimes, hereditary factors or genes also causes hair fall, and in such severe cases treating hair fall become difficult. When hair fall is caused by heredity, then a surgical option like hair transplant (FUE and FUT) can help.


Telogen Effluvium:This condition is due to a sudden body change like post severe fevers, blood loss, surgery, post pregnancy or mental trauma causes hair fall. This is a temporary state.Hairstyling products: These products are rich in harsh chemicals and cause damage to the hair roots and scalp, and this can trigger hair fall. Styling products such as rollers, straighteners, dryers, hair coloring, bleaching damage the hair follicles by causing inflammation, damage, and scarring in the scalp and hair follicle. This also results in causing hair fall.


Trichotillomania: Trichotillomania is a psychiatric impulsive condition where there is an urge to pull out hair.


PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where there is hormonal imbalance leading to hair loss.


Medical conditions: Medical conditions like SLE, an autoimmune disease and hypothyroidism also can cause hair loss.


Menopause: Hormonal imbalances during menopause can also cause severe hair fall in women.


Malnutrition/Anemia: Iron deficiency anemia is a prime reason for hair fall in women. Deficiency of protein and vitamins also is a reason.


Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy causes a gradual or dramatic hair loss (Anagen Effluvium).This is a temporary phenomenon.


Medications: Various medications like oral contraceptive pills, psychiatric and antidepressant medicines,oral retinoids, etc may cause hair fall.
